It was 7AM.
I really did not want to go for a run. My daughter was not sleeping well.. and I was just tired.
Yet, I knew I should. And it was one of my current top goals.
So, against my will, I put on my running clothes.
EVERY DAY IS A NEW BEGINNING. TAKE A DEEP BREATH AND START AGAIN…
I ran just 5 km….
My body wasn’t in the mood. I was not in the mood… Weather was not in the mood. Even dogs were not in the mood. My brain was frantically making up excuses to prevent my workout from happening. (It’s too cold outside, I will get sick, I have so many things to do, I am tired, I am bad mother, wife, everyone is sleeping …what else???)
However, instead of going back to bed, I forced myself up and on to my run.
Even though I didn’t want to go running, I knew that I needed to.
That’s the irony, we usually know what we need to do, even in the face of not wanting to.
So, how do you overcome that negative voice in your head?
The answer is… you do the important things anyway. Even, when you don’t want to.
Here are 4 Tips on Getting Your Motivation Back
- Don’t give up, the beginning is always the hardest – The first step is always the hardest, whether literal or figurative. Force yourself to take that first action. It doesn’t have to be a big step. Give yourself just 15 minutes…. Just try it… Life is all about your choices, nobody else’s. If you decide to give up, that’s your problem. Don’t look to blame somebody else. This is your life. You must take control of it.
- Enjoy the moment – Once in motion, it is easier to stay in motion. If you can survive the beginning, you will survive until the conclusion, whatever that might be. In between the beginning and conclusion, give it all you’ve got! Before you realize it, the once undesirable task will become second nature.
- If the weather is putting you off, adapt your training Go for a swim instead of a run. Or get out there and endure it and see that as part of the challenge.
- Celebrate successes on the way You’re going to have highs and lows, but if you enjoy the journey and celebrate successes you will feel you are achieving something.
Even If You Don’t Want to…Do It Anyway
What don’t you want to do today?
Go ahead, make up all those internal excuses. Tell yourself why you don’t want to do it, or can’t do it.
SET A GOAL
Take an honest look at where you are now and plan how you’re going to get from there to where you want to be. Not just in terms of the training, but rest and recovery, the equipment you might need to use, your nutrition. Focus on the gratification that will come from achieving something new. You’ll feel so good, physically and mentally.
You’ll feel great later.
Life is all about your choices, nobody else’s. If you decide to give up, that’s your problem. Don’t look to blame somebody else. This is your life. You must take control of it.
